“Two years ago I was introduced to the Omni Team by a colleague. Being someone who never had to manage a cleanroom or lab build-out in the past, I was a little nervous about what I was getting into. The OMNI Team was excellent and walked me through each decision that we had to make in as much detail as I needed. This included offering great suggestions for cost savings along the way. In addition, they were able to easily handle the changes that we wanted to make late in the project. I am so appreciative of this Team and the way that they work with us, not for us, that we are now on our third and fourth project together! I can’t recommend them enough.”

Cleanroom Classifications Overview

Understanding Cleanroom Standards

Cleanrooms are essential environments where the cleanliness of the air is meticulously measured and maintained. The classification of a cleanroom is determined by the number and size of airborne particles. These measurements follow specific standards, which are vital in various industries like pharmaceuticals, biotech, and electronics manufacturing.

U.S. Federal and International Standards

In the United States, the classification was traditionally guided by Federal Standard 209 (FS 209E), which categorizes cleanrooms based on the number of particles equal to or larger than 0.5 micrometers found in one cubic foot of air. This method remains in use under the most recent version, known as 209E.

Globally, the International Standards Organization’s ISO 14644-1 is the prevailing standard. This more recent system measures cleanrooms by counting particles 0.1 micrometers and larger per cubic meter of air, using a logarithmic scale. For example, an ISO Class 5 cleanroom is allowed a maximum of 100,000 particles per cubic meter.

Classifications Explained

  • Federal Standard 209E (FS 209E): Uses classifications like “Class 100” or “Class 1000,” indicating the number of 0.5 micrometer or larger particles allowed per cubic foot of air. The standard also supports interpolation for classifications such as “Class 2000.”

  • ISO 14644-1: This standard utilizes smaller numbers, such as ISO Class 5, referring to the logarithmic count of particles 0.1 micrometers or larger permitted per cubic meter of air.

Transition to Global Standards

While FS 209E is used domestically in the U.S., international compliance often requires adherence to ISO standards. In the UK, the British Standard 5295 is transitioning to BS EN ISO 14644-1, reflecting a move towards global uniformity in cleanroom classification.

Understanding Particle Concentration

Both the FS 209E and ISO 14644-1 standards assume a logarithmic relationship between particle size and concentration, meaning complete elimination of particles is not achievable. Typically, ordinary room air ranks as Class 1,000,000 or ISO 9, highlighting the specialized nature of cleanroom environments.

This information aims to clarify the standards and classifications crucial for maintaining the controlled environments necessary for high-precision industries, ensuring product safety and effectiveness.
